VSBS-001: Weather Balloon Launch Mission

Welcome to the dedicated page for our pioneering mission, VSBS-001! This project marks Vikyaan's first foray into high-altitude atmospheric research, utilizing a custom-built weather balloon to gather invaluable data and test innovative sensor payloads.

Weather Balloon Launch

Mission Objectives

  • Atmospheric Data Collection: Gather real-time data on temperature, humidity, pressure, and wind speed at various altitudes, up to the stratosphere.
  • Sensor Payload Testing: Evaluate the performance of new, lightweight sensor technologies designed for extreme high-altitude environments.
  • Educational Outreach: Document the entire process, from design to launch, to create engaging educational content for students and enthusiasts.
  • Proof of Concept: Establish a robust methodology for future stratospheric research missions and technology demonstrations.

Technology & Design

The VSBS-001 balloon system comprises several key components:

  • High-Altitude Balloon: A specialized latex balloon designed to expand and burst at altitudes exceeding 30,000 meters.
  • Payload Module: A custom-designed, lightweight enclosure housing an array of sensors, GPS tracker, and communication systems.
  • Telemetry System: Transmits real-time data back to our ground station, allowing for continuous monitoring of the balloon's ascent and environmental readings.
  • Recovery System: Includes a parachute for a safe descent of the payload module after the balloon bursts, ensuring data recovery.

Current Status & Future Plans

We are currently in the final testing phase of the payload module, ensuring all sensors are calibrated and communication systems are robust. The launch window is anticipated for late 2025, weather permitting. Following the successful launch and data recovery, we plan to:

  • Analyze collected data and publish findings.
  • Develop enhanced sensor payloads for subsequent missions.
  • Integrate AI/ML for predictive atmospheric modeling based on collected data.
  • Host workshops and interactive sessions based on the project's insights.
